Interactions ive had with handmaids, and what I think of them.

Generally I try to avoid talking to Handmaids, not only because we are not supposed to "fraternize," with them, but because I don't really like them. The Handmaid in our house right know, Offred (Of - Fred, who is our commander), likes to try and talk with the other handmaids and myself. So we gossip a little with her, give her tokens of information from the goings on of our lives. For the most, I only talk her when I have to give her instructions for getting groceries (because she gets them wrong a lot!!), or whenever we have "the ritual," or when the commander has sex with her to try to reproduce. A while ago she caught me an Cora (a fellow Martha) talking about the Handmaids. I was telling her that "I would not debase myself like that" (10), and that they are basically sluts. But whatever, I don't really care what she thinks of me.

I really don't like Handmaids and what they do. In fact I think what they do is disgusting, I think they are modern day sluts. Instead of becoming Marthas or econowives, or something of that sort (apparently we are given a choice) they choose to have sex with upper class men to make babies. How atrocious! How rude! Even though I envy them for being fertile, or being able to have babies, I would not give myself to the government, not like that... I just don't like Handmaids.

My name is Rita. I am a Martha in the house of the commander Fred.

I am the oldest Martha in the house, so I have some unofficail power or authority over the other Marthas and the Handmaids. I have brown skin. I always wear a dull green dress, and when I go outside I wear a green veil. Even though I am forced to wear these things, I dont really mind.

Because I do not have many freedoms in this society I spend my time doing rather trivial activities. I love to gossip with the other Marthas, and sometimes with the Handmaids, though I dont really like the Handmaids. I belive that there are alternatives to giving your body to the government. I would not debase myself like that. Sometimes we gossip about event sthat have occured, like when another Martha was unnecessarily shot and killed. We also like to find out about what is going on in other houses, like what other Marthas are doing, how the houses are run, and if our "family," is more succseful than their "family."

My best dream is that I am let free, and that things go back to normal before the government took over. My worst nightmare is that I will be shot and killed senslessly because a guardain or angel is too trigger happy.
